Bring GIS Into Your Mobile Work Management Apps

Posted by Ty van den Akker on Feb 16, 2017

Critigen recently announced availability of LEMUR, a lightweight, configurable platform for adding business mapping to your mobile app. Lemur (Lightweight Enterprise Maps Using RESTful services) is different from other tools because:

  • Lemur is real Esri GIS, delivered in device-native app controls
  • Lemur provides services to help match your business data to your GIS – a form of geocoding
  • Lemur provides advanced GIS caching services for offline use
  • Lemur gives administrators control over distribution of GIS data, caching & cache sizes
  • Lemur maps can become a primary user interface or start screen to existing tabular apps.

This article explores a couple of very practical ways Lemur is being used to save money for teams that work with distributed infrastructure and assets.

Electric and water utility customers are using Lemur to provide information stored in the corporate GIS to their field maintenance, inspection and asset management teams. Asset and work information are stored in SAP Business Suite Plant Maintenance (PM) module or SAP Business Suite 4 HANA (S/4HANA), but essential engineering and operational data is stored in the enterprise GIS. Since Lemur is a control that can be loaded inside of any application, customers can select best-of-breed components, or mix and match components to deliver an ideal solution to their field users. For example,

  • Use SAP Work Manager (formerly Syclo) with the Lemur map control to provide easily configured and quickly deployed maps that field teams can use as a primary interface.
  • Use a heavily customized Work Manager with built-in map control and leverage a cloud subscription to Lemur’s Geocache service to scale offline usage to hundreds or thousands of users and to large geographies
  • Use Innovapptive mWorkOrder to manage field work with Lemur pre-integrated to get fully featured, seamless GIS map experience inside Innovapptive’s rapidly deployable app.
  • Build a custom app for field work management and embed the Lemur map control. Use Lemur’s cloud-based and rules-driven geoenrichment service to geocode work orders, notifications, functional locations, operations or other business objects, and use Lemur Geocache to facilitate centralized management of GIS data caching and distribution.
  • Connect Lemur’s geoenrichment service to SAP Geographical Framework (GEF) to leverage your GEF implementation and still get all the configurability and offline capabilities of Lemur.
  • Introduce your current vendor of mobile work tools to Critigen and get Lemur integrated into your existing tools with any combination of the features listed above!

Local government customers are also using Lemur to extend their wealth of GIS information to field teams. A local government using SAP S/4HANA and Innovapptive mWorkOrder to enable its Transportation, Water Distribution, and Sanitary Sewer asset maintenance teams uses Lemur to enable Work Management for it’s teams. With Lemur pre-integrated into mWorkOrder, field teams easily find the right Asset, Work Order, or Notification and launch their key workflows by tapping on the map – close Work Orders, log time, view details, navigate to the mWorkorder details screen, and other frequently used actions. Rules configured in Lemur add attributes from the GIS to Equipment and Work Orders. An on-premises deployment of Lemur Geocache distributes the right GIS information to the right field workers based on their territories and the Work Order types they’re assigned to work on.

As a platform and a software component that can be added to virtually any application, Lemur provides the ultimate solution for discerning customers to deliver a high-fidelity, interactive GIS mapping experience to their field users. Critigen continues to add partners to its OEM program, increasing the field app options for customers wanting Lemur.

Lemur saves customers money by reducing error rates in field maintenance records, simplifying tools, reducing training costs, and ensuring field users can find the information they need to complete work efficiently and on the first visit. IT departments also benefit from rapid cloud deployment options, easy upgrades, a common geospatial platform, and central management of GIS caching.
