Oil and Gas

Utility MapKnowing where your assets are, is as important as knowing their condition. Critigen integrates location into your business processes, giving you the operational intelligence you need to catch problems before they start. Critigen also utilizes your sensor data with GIS to visualize asset performance, allowing you to quickly pinpoint problems when they do happen.

By adding the “where” piece to the asset management puzzle, Critigen supports your organization’s efforts to:

  • Ensure you get oil and gas out of the ground and transported safely to processing facilities in a cost effective and environmentally friendly way.
  • Correctly assess risks to people, assets, the environment, and your reputation.
  • Efficiently inspect pipelines and respond rapidly to leaks.
  • Eliminate data update backlogs and use up-to-date information to improve safety.

Critigen supports the following phases of the oil and gas production/distribution lifecycle:

Oil and Gas UpstreamDuring upstream production, use digital maps and mobile apps to increase real-time situational awareness and strengthen operational performance. Take the guesswork out of locating feeders and avoid accidental line breaks. Provide field crews the data and tools they need to find, inspect, and safely repair assets.

Oil and Gas MidstreamGo beyond using GIS for environmental planning and regulatory compliance. Build a complete view of midstream operations with easy-to-use maps and apps that show the full oil and gas network. Optimize inspections, routing, and regulatory compliance with user-friendly workflows and dashboards.

Oil and Gas DownstreamMake the leap from paper maps to digital visualization and optimize your refinery and storage operations. Conduct clash detection to avoid conflicts between routine inspections, planned maintenance and new construction. Integrate sensors and effectively mitigate risk. Empower your mobile workforce with location-aware mobile apps to increase productivity and improve safety.

Marathon Oil

Marathon Extends Digital Transformation to Field Operations with Mobility Strategy

Marathon OilAs an independent E&P, Marathon Oil manages a portfolio of over 800,000 net surface acres in the U.S. alone. Marathon Oil’s focus is on keeping production safely flowing while keeping costs low. Operational excellence is one of their core values and differentiators. To keep their operational advantage, they hired Critigen to explore possible technological enhancements.

Digital transformation is well underway at Marathon with the introduction of control centers for the automation of production. Marathon wanted that digital transformation to extend to the field as well. Critigen worked with Marathon program managers to integrate GIS into their SAP Plant Manager and Work Manager implementations.

This unique geo-enablement solution gave Marathon the ability to:

  • Detect data changes in the field and office, and sync those changes across different technologies (e.g., Oracle, SAP, Esri ArcGIS), providing a single system of “truth” for decision making.
  • Provide field crews with a “Near Me” function, giving them actionable insight into issues that might be happening near them, while they are still in the field.

With Critigen’s assistance, Marathon was systematically able to decrease data update times, enhance data integrity, reduce windshield time, and improve safety. That’s what operational excellence is all about.

Colonial Pipeline Company

Colonial Deploys Tablet-friendly Web-based Mapping Application to Help Manage Tank Assets

Colonial PipelineFrom Texas to New Jersey, Colonial Pipeline manages 5,500 miles of pipe, and over 500 tanks that connect to 260 terminals. Delivering fuel safely and efficiently to customers in 11 states requires technological innovation and teamwork, both in the field and in the office. To help them meet their operational goals, Colonial Pipeline hired Critigen to enhance the management of storage tanks.

Regulations mandate tank inspections and maintenance at defined intervals. Managers and tank crews need information about individual tanks including: location, type of contents, construction method, roof type, characteristics of wells, vents, drains, and courses, type and application dates of coating/paint, and inspection and maintenance history. Critigen worked closely with Colonial’s operations team to efficiently track, visualize, and distribute an accurate, up-to-date operational view of tank conditions and characteristics to all parties through the creation of a tank web application.

Employees who make use of this solution may work in the field or office and the application provides the appropriate level of access based on pre-defined roles for viewers, editors, and inspectors. The functionality enabled for each role gives the user exactly what they need to quickly complete their task.

Key benefits include:

  • A tablet-friendly tank inspection web mapping application
  • A map interface that makes it easy to visually search for tank information
  • At-a-glance tank inspection status using information-rich map symbols
  • Data drill-down capability to quickly find all data related to a tank or tank component using the same map interface
  • Built-in user input validation for improved data integrity on all edits
  • A single system of record for tank location, asset information, and maintenance

With the new tank inspection web-mapping application, Colonial Pipeline is better able to meet their operational goals of clean, safe, and efficient delivery of fuel to their customers, all while keeping costs as low as possible.

CPL App Screen Capture

The tank application uses a map interface and dynamic symbols of green, yellow, or red to indicate the condition status, from good to poor. Managers, inspectors, or maintenance crews can click on a tank, and query relevant tank characteristics to help them manage their assets.
