Hydro One, Ontario’s largest electric utility, was facing challenges with capturing information about the assets they put into service and entering the data into their back-office systems. Their legacy process was paper-based, and edits in the field were captured as pen and ink notes on the design. Critigen helped take the process from 6 months to 6 days and ensure it supports data consistency between SAP and GIS
Working with Hydro One and its stakeholders Critigen designed and built a process that enables line crews to digitally update designs in the field and push that data back to GIS and SAP in days, not months. With the new process crews can view assets on the map in their true location relative to connected assets and customer locations. Crews avoid unnecessary trips to assets that don’t require maintenance and they can see other crew locations on the map for better coordination and mutual aid. GIS and SAP data is synchronized nightly and delivered via Critigen’s Geocache Manager™ as an offline cache to the mobile device, allowing workers to click on the map for timely asset information. An enhanced “As-Built” editing tool allows workers to update electrical asset information during installation, resulting in better data governance, improved latency and safety.
